It is no secret that Nigeria's political landscape is often marked by controversy and tensions, especially during election seasons. The recent judgment by the presidential election tribunal in favor of President Bola Tinubu has once again ignited heated debates and criticisms.
The Katsina State chapter of the PDP has strongly rejected the verdict, throwing its weight behind the claims that it is far from delivering justice to the Nigerian people. Alhaji Umar Tsauri, the former Chairman of Atiku/Lado Campaign Team, made the party's stance clear during a press briefing in Katsina.
According to Tsauri, the tribunal's judgment, as well as that of another election tribunal in Katsina, has left much to be desired in terms of upholding justice. He lamented, "We stand to say the judgment passed by the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) has been far from justice."
Criticizing both the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) and the learned justices of the court of appeal, Tsauri accused them of failing to deliver justice. He alleged that the promises made by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, of using accurate and credible methods during the elections ended up being empty words.
Furthermore, Tsauri expressed disappointment in the tribunal's failure to base its judgments on facts rather than technicalities. He claimed that lawyers on the opposition side had invested much effort in presenting evidence and witnesses, only for the tribunal to disregard them in favor of personal interests.
Tsauri went on to highlight the flaws in the electoral process during the 2023 elections in Katsina, citing numerous instances of malpractice, intimidation, and even voting disruptions due to insecurity. He criticized the tribunal for its treatment of PDP members, alleging that some were unjustly expelled based on technicalities, while others were denied justice despite presenting convincing evidence.
The Katsina PDP is calling on all its supporters nationwide and within the state to reject the judgments delivered by the PEPC and the election tribunal. While they may be compelled to accept the verdict legally, they firmly oppose the injustice they believe has been served.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with political tensions and questions surrounding the fairness of its electoral processes, it remains to be seen how the rejection of this verdict will impact the overall political landscape of the country.
