Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside Ogun State governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, former Ogun State governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, and other prominent dignitaries, gathered at the Lateef Jakande Annual Memorial Lecture, organized by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), to celebrate the life and leadership of the late Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande.
During the event, they urged Nigerians to learn from and embody the exceptional qualities that defined Jakande's tenure as the first civilian governor of Lagos State, from 1979 to 1983. Recognized as a journalist and politician, Jakande left an indelible mark on Lagosians through his visionary leadership and exemplary governance.
Representing Governor Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat expressed the administration's commitment to honoring Jakande's legacy. To immortalize his name, the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy was established. This academy aims to empower the younger generation, instilling in them the principles of responsive, responsible, and selfless leadership exhibited by Alhaji Lateef Jakande throughout his public and private life.
The leadership program offered by the academy will provide transformational, non-partisan opportunities to young Nigerians aspiring to make a positive impact through public service. By organizing the annual memorial lecture, Governor Sanwo-Olu believes that Jakande's ideals and principles will continue to inspire and guide future generations.
On behalf of Governor Abiodun, consultant and former Commissioner in Ondo State Kayode Akinmade commended Jakande's contributions to professionalism and responsible journalism. He emphasized the need for Nigeria to embrace Jakande's legacy as the nation strives for development and a culture of democracy. Akinmade recognized Jakande's dedication to public service, which saw him lay the foundation for modern Lagos through progressive governance and infrastructural development.
The Chairman of the occasion, General Ike Nwachukwu (rtd.), also shared his firsthand experience with Jakande, highlighting his reliability and ability to bring out the best in those around him. He praised the late icon for his unwavering commitment to journalism and media professionalism.
Aremo Olusegun Osoba, in his remarks, emphasized Jakande's involvement in the formation of the NGE and his instrumental role in bringing the International Press Institute (IPI) to Nigeria. He admired Jakande's grassroots approach to governance, particularly his availability and willingness to listen to the concerns of the people.
The President of the NGE, Eze Anaba, acknowledged Jakande's profound impact on modern journalism in Nigeria. He cited the establishment of the Guild of Editors, the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, and the Nigerian Union of Journalists as significant contributions to the media industry.
In memory of Jakande's outstanding achievements, the NGE inaugurated the Lateef Jakande lecture series to honor his legacy and preserve institutional memory. The event seeks to appreciate Jakande's contributions, inspire present and future generations, and find innovative solutions to the challenges faced by the media industry today.
